Panasonic TC-PZT60 series prepares to reign

Panasonic TC-PZT60 series

LAS VEGAS--After several years' absence a Z-series TV -- last seen in 2010 -- has once again taken the crown in Panasonic's plasma television lineup. TheTC-PZT60 series will be available in a choice of two sizes: 65 and 60 inches.
The company's 2013 flagship promises "Beyond the Reference" picture quality, with an all-new Studio Master panel that has the thinnest gas layer yet, which the company says will remove dim and double images. There's a newly developed red phosphor, and it offers faster switching than ever, THX certification for both 2D and 3D, and improved 3D performance -- namely less crosstalk -- according to Panasonic. We called VT50 the best TV of 2012 and one of the best ever, and we expect great things out of the ZT60's picture.
I got a quick look at the ZT60 compared to the VT50 in a dark-room demo at Panasonic's booth, and the new panel did produce slightly deeper black levels than even that vaunted set. Panasonic's rep mentioned the company was still tweaking the software, but the improvements, while subtle, were clearly visible. Blacks didn't look quite as deep the "absolute" seen on OLED TVs, but they were pretty close. I was also told the ZT60 has a slightly better light-rejecting filter than the VT60, but it was tough to tell any difference in the booth. Suffice to say I'm psyched to get my hands on a shipping sample, which Panasonic says will be in the April/May time frame.
The company has added a few new features this year to both the VT60 and the ZT60, including Voice Interaction, a built-in camera (which may only appear on the VT60; that's still TBD), "Voice Interaction," a dual-core processor and an improved touch-pad controller, and an optional Touch Pen that also works with the step-down models. Of course the Viera Connect suite of smart TV services is still onboard; no word on whether it integrates the Smart TV Alliance interface.

Samsung's video search tool for TVs will be coming to tablets, too

Exec TJ Kang tells CNET that certain tablets will be able to use the new feature that lets users search live TV and various streaming services through one app.

Samsung America Senior Vice President Joe Stinziano describes new features for TVs, including a feature that allows users to search all video services and live TV in one screen.

LAS VEGAS -- Samsung's new video search tool, which the company unveiled yesterday for its TVs, will also be available for certain tablets this spring, a Samsung executive told CNET.
That means users will be able to use one app to navigate all of their different video services, and use their tablets as a remote to control their TVs, TJ Kang, senior vice president of Samsung's media solution center, told CNET in an interview after Samsung's press conference yesterday at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. In his role, Kang oversees new services and apps made by Samsung for its products.
"You could either stream video to the tablet and start watching on the tablet and take it anywhere with you, or if you want to share that video with other family members, you can send that to the TV," Kang said. "We're giving that seamless, multiscreen, multiuser experience."

Panasonic Web site reveals preorder pricing on some 2013 TVs

Most TV makers who announced products at 2013 omitted any mention of pricing, but Panasonic's site has that and other details on some of its 2013 TVs.

Preorder pricing for the Panasonic ST60 series is already up on Panasonic's Web site.
in January. Manufacturers have just debuted their newest products, and final suggested retail prices are usually subject to some jockeying before the products launch over the next few months. That's why I was surprised when my colleague Matthew Moskovciak sent me a message saying that Panasonic's official site, shop.panasonic.com, was showing pricing and other details for TVs the company had just announced this morning.
Most of the company's TV series are listed on the site now, with the exception of the lowest-end X60 and EM60 models. Currently only two that I found had pricing: the ST60 and S60 models.
I contacted a Panasonic spokesman who said that indeed this pricing is official and not a mistake as I first suspected. I was told "those are select preorder offers." Indeed, I was able to place a mock preorder with no problem.
